Riverside County Library System developed four computer classes in response to a recent community survey of residents, ages 50+, which had identified a strong desire for instruction in the following topics: email, Internet searching, word processing, and digital photo editing. Sixteen classes were held from March-June 2011with 8 students per class (class size was intentionally limited to ensure plenty of hands-on learning opportunities) for a total of 128 students. Evaluation surveys confirmed that 100% of participants reported achieving at least one of their own learning goals related to each course topic. The project highlighted the library’s responsiveness to their community by meeting a repeated customer request even in a time of shrinking resources, for which all participants expressed their gratitude.
